Alcohol and Fertility: Do I Really Have to Quit Completely?

Alcohol and Fertility: Do I Really Have to Quit Completely?

Topic: Lifestyle choices

“Just relax and have a glass of wine!” It is the most common (and annoying) advice given to couples trying to conceive. But does alcohol actually hurt your chances?

The Data on Women

  • Heavy Drinking (>14 drinks/week): Clearly harmful. Reduces fertility, increases miscarriage risk.
  • Moderate Drinking (3-6 drinks/week): The data is mixed. Some studies show a slight delay in time-to-pregnancy.
  • Binge Drinking (>4 drinks in one sitting): This is the danger zone. Even if you only dissolve once a week, a binge spikes cortisol and inflammation, potentially disrupting ovulation.

The Data on Men

We often forget the partner.

  • Alcohol lowers testosterone and increases estrogen in men.
  • It noticeably reduces sperm count and motility.
  • Crucially: It increases sperm DNA fragmentation. (The sperm swims, but the map inside is broken).

The IVF Factor

If you are doing IVF, the rules are stricter.

  • Studies show that women who drink significantly during an IVF cycle have fewer eggs retrieved and lower pregnancy rates.
  • Recommendation: Complete abstinence for both partners for 3 months before retrieval.

The Verdict

  • Natural Conception: You don’t have to be a monk. 1-2 drinks a week is likely fine.
  • Struggling/IVF: Cut it out. Why take the chance on a gamble that costs lakhs?

If you need a vice, choose chocolate.
