Perimenopause Symptom Tracking Template You Can Start Today

Perimenopause Symptom Tracking Template You Can Start Today

Topic: Tracking guide

Perimenopause (the transition to menopause) can start as early as age 35 or 40. But unlike puberty, which is obvious, perimenopause is sneaky.

It starts with subtle shifts: shorter cycles, worse sleep, new anxiety. Women often spend years thinking they are “just stressed” or “losing it.”

Tracking is your sanity check. It helps you and your doctor connect the dots.

What to Track (The Big 5)

Don’t just track bleeding. Track the “Soft Signs.”

1. Cycle Length & Flow

  • The Shift: Cycles often get shorter (e.g., 28 days -> 24 days) because Progesterone is dropping.
  • The Flow: Note “Flooding” (super heavy days) or clots.

2. Night Sweats / Heat

  • The Distinction: Do you wake up hot? Or sweating? Even mild “warm flushes” count.
  • Timing: often happen pre-period.

3. Sleep Quality

  • The Pattern: “Maintenance Insomnia.” You fall asleep fine but wake up at 3 AM and can’t get back to sleep. This is a classic progesterone-deficiency sign.

4. Rage / Mood

  • The Intensity: Note episodes of “unexplained rage” or weeping. Is it tied to where you are in the cycle?

5. Joint Pain

  • The Surprise: Estrogen lubricates joints. Aching knees or stiffness in the morning is a very common (but ignored) symptom.

How to Do It

  • Paper: Use a simple calendar. Mark “X” for bleeding. Use codes: S (Sleep bad), H (Hot flash), M (Mood).
  • App: Use a menopause-specific app like Balance (Dr. Louise Newson) which generates a report for your doctor.

The “3-Month Rule”

Bring 3 months of this data to your GP/Gynae.

  • Without Data: “I’m tired and moody.” -> Diagnosis: Antidepressants.
  • With Data: “I have 24-day cycles, 3 AM waking, and joint pain.” -> Diagnosis: Perimenopause. Discussion: HRT/Lifestyle.

You aren’t imagining it. Write it down.
