Why Do I Get Diarrhea on My Period? (The Science of Period Poops)
Why Do I Get Diarrhea on My Period? (The Science of Period Poops)
Topic: Digestion
It is the symptom nobody talks about. You get your period, and suddenly your digestion goes haywire. Loose stools, cramping, and urgency. “Period Poops” are real.
The Culprit: Prostaglandins
To shed the uterine lining, your body releases chemicals called Prostaglandins. Their job is to tell the smooth muscle of the uterus to contract (squeeze).
- The Spillover: Prostaglandins are not GPS-guided. They often spill over to the nearby neighbors—the bowels.
- The Result: Your bowel muscles also start contracting violently. This rushes food through the system too fast -> Diarrhea.
The Other Factor: Progesterone Drop
- Before Period: Progesterone is high. Progesterone is a muscle relaxant -> Constipation.
- During Period: Progesterone drops. The “brake” is released -> The system flushes.
How to Manage It
- Avoid Coffee: Caffeine stimulates the bowels. Don’t add fuel to the fire on Day 1.
- Ibuprofen: NSAIDs work by blocking prostaglandin production. Taking one before the cramping/diarrhea starts can prevent the chemical storm.
- Fiber: Soluble fiber (oats, bananas) helps bulk up the stool.
It is uncomfortable, but it signals that your body is doing its job of shedding the lining.
