Why Do My Boobs Hurt Before My Period? (Cyclical Mastalgia)
Topic: Breast health
About a week before your period, your breasts transform. They get heavy, swollen, and so tender that walking down stairs hurts. This is Cyclical Mastalgia.
The Cause: Estrogen Dominance + Water Retention
- Estrogen: Stimulates the breast ducts to grow.
- Progesterone: Stimulates the milk glands to swell.
- The imbalance: If you have too much Estrogen relative to Progesterone (common in your 30s/40s), the breast tissue essentially “over-reacts” and retains fluid.
Is It Normal?
- Mild heaviness: Normal.
- Severe pain that affects sleep/movement: Not normal. It is a sign of inflammation.
The Fixes
- The “No-Coffee” Trial: Caffeine constricts blood vessels and worsens cysts. Cutting it out for the luteal phase (10 days before period) works for 60% of women.
- Evening Primrose Oil: Contains GLA (Gamma-Linolenic Acid) which reduces breast inflammation. (Dose: 1000-3000mg).
- Vitamin E: 400 IU daily helps reduce fibrocystic changes.
- Flax Seeds: Help metabolize excess estrogen.
When to Worry
If the pain is Non-Cyclical (random timing), or if you feel a hard, fixed lump that doesn’t shrink after your period, see a doctor. But generalized, both-sided soreness is almost always hormonal.
